Abstract
The adaptation of personal protective equipment (hereinafter referred to as PPE) for firefighters and rescuers to the climatic conditions of the region of operation is an important component of ensuring safe working conditions for them. The use of combat clothing, hand, foot, and head protection equipment of the appropriate climatic version makes it possible to maintain an acceptable or even comfortable microclimate in the interior of the PPE, which directly affects both safety and human performance. Field tests of various PPE for firefighter-rescuer carried out for the first time in landfill conditions allowed, along with the results of laboratory chamber tests, to objectively assess the thermal protection characteristics of products when operating in conditions of negative temperatures and wind loads. The assessment was based on the results of measurements of the tester’s skin temperature and his subjective assessments. The analysis of the experimental results allowed us to draw the following conclusions: - the use of PPE of the same climatic version makes it possible to ensure the principle of equal heat resistance in all areas of the body; - personal protective equipment of the climatic version U provides acceptable parameters of the undersuit space at temperatures up to minus 40 °C, special PPE is required for operation at lower temperatures; - constructive and material science refinement of head protection equipment (balaclava, helmet) is necessary to increase their thermal protection in conditions of strong wind speeds of more than 5 m/s.
