Abstract

Poisoning cases in animals occur as a result of curious eating habits, environmental exposure, or intentional interventions. Although less common than other clinical conditions, such as infection and trauma, these conditions carry a very high risk of death and significant economic loss. This section discusses the basic treatment strategies and decontamination protocols followed in poisoning cases, based on current approaches. In cases of poisoning, stabilizing vital functions such as respiration and circulation and providing supportive treatments (fluid and electrolyte balance, seizure control, etc.) are of paramount importance before laboratory diagnosis. The second stage of the intervention, decontamination, aims to remove toxins from the body through ocular, dermal, and especially oral routes of exposure (inducing vomiting, gastric/enterogastric lavage, and applying activated charcoal and laxatives), depending on the route of exposure. From species-specific emetic options (apomorphine/ropinirole in dogs, xylazine in cats) to the adsorbent properties of activated charcoal and accelerating excretion by altering urine pH, many methods must be optimized on a case-by-case basis. In the final stage, a successful treatment protocol relies on neutralizing the toxic effect with a specific antidote for the identified toxin and detoxifying the hazardous environment.
