Abstract
This article examines the experience of the Mor Çatı Women’s Shelter Foundation (Mor Çatı) in combating male violence in Turkey. Since 1990, Mor Çatı has developed a social work practice shaped by feminist principles through direct solidarity with women subjected to male violence. At the core of this practice lies the aim of enabling women to make their own decisions, to become empowered, and to regain control over their lives as they move out of the cycle of violence. The article discusses Mor Çatı’s approach, which understands male violence against women as a product of the patriarchal system stemming from gender discrimination; the political and practical dimensions of the solidarity built with women experiencing violence; how volunteer-based social work intertwines with feminist methodology; and the role of this experience in knowledge production and policymaking. Furthermore, it addresses how the experiences gained through the work carried out in the solidarity center and the shelter contribute to monitoring and exposing legal and institutional shortcomings in combating violence against women and to shaping feminist policy. In this sense, the Mor Çatı experience exemplifies how feminist solidarity can serve as a tool for both individual empowerment and social transformation.
