Abstract

Cumhuriyet’in ilanıyla birlikte kadın hakları alanında köklü değişiklikler gerçekleşmiş; eğitimde eşitlik, medeni kanunla aile içi hakların düzenlenmesi, 1934’te seçme ve seçilme haklarının tanınması sürecin dönüm noktaları olmuştur. 1980 sonrası gelişen kadın hareketleri ise toplumsal cinsiyet eşitliğini gündemde tutarak önemli kazanımlar sağlamıştır. Bu bağlamda ilgili kitap bölümü, kadın haklarının tarihsel serüvenini küresel ve ulusal bağlamda ele alarak günümüz toplumsal eşitlik mücadelesinin tarihsel temellerini ortaya koymayı amaçlamaktadır. The historical development of women’s rights reflects social transformations both globally and in Turkey. In prehistoric times, social roles were shaped by gender, while in the Middle Ages, women largely remained in secondary positions within religious and feudal structures. With the Enlightenment, discourses of equality, freedom, and human rights gained strength; during the 19th and 20th centuries, women’s movements achieved major political and legal reforms. The right to vote, access to education, and participation in the labor force constituted this process’s critical turning points. Women’s education and social visibility in Turkey were limited during the Ottoman era, but the Tanzimat and the Second Constitutional Period marked the first reform initiatives. Following the proclamation of the Republic, profound changes took place in the field of women’s rights, including equal access to education, the regulation of family rights through the Civil Code, and the granting of suffrage in 1934. After the 1980s, feminist movements further advanced the struggle by keeping gender equality on the public agenda. In this context, the present book chapter examines the historical trajectory of women’s rights in both global and national contexts, aiming to reveal the historical foundations of today’s struggle for social equality.
