Abstract
This chapter examines the transformation of motherhood ideology in modern societies and the phenomenon of the “double burden” experienced by working women from a sociological perspective. Motherhood is approached not merely as a biological reality but as a socially constructed role shaped by gender norms and cultural values. Although modernization has increased women’s access to education and participation in the labor force, care work continues to be disproportionately assigned to women. As a result, women are required to balance paid employment with domestic responsibilities, leading to the persistence of the double burden. In addition, the concept of mental load provides an important framework for understanding the invisible dimensions of motherhood, including cognitive and emotional labor. The process of digitalization has further transformed motherhood by offering new opportunities for access to information and social support, while simultaneously reinforcing idealized norms of “good motherhood” through digital media. Overall, contemporary motherhood emerges as a complex and multi-layered phenomenon that encompasses both opportunities and persistent inequalities. Therefore, motherhood should be analyzed not only as an individual experience but also as a structural and societal issue shaped by broader socio-economic and cultural dynamics.
