Abstract
<jats:p>The purpose of the study is to identify historical features of the development of migration processes and the formation of views on population migration in Russia. An attempt was made to present the history of the development of views of domestic scientists on population migration, to analyze the formation of scientific approaches to the study of migration processes and migration problems in order to determine what place population migration occupies in the historical and socio-demographic development of Russia, and to answer the problematic question: does modern Russian society need to disseminate a positive view of population migration as an important demographic process. The study is based on the methodology of historical and scientific research, a retrospective research method was used. The study is based on the works of domestic scientists, researchers in the field of population migration, the analysis of which made it possible to reveal how the development of views on such an important demographic process as population migration occurred. The paper examines the features of the historical development of migration processes in Russia and the formation of views of Russian scientists on population migration, starting with the works of M.V. Lomonosov and ending with the modern stage of development. It is revealed that population migrations occupy an important place in the historical and socio-demographic development of Russia. Throughout the historical period, migration processes contributed to the development of the territories of Russia and the territorial distribution of its population, and the role of population migrations in the socio-demographic development of the country has been constantly increasing and is especially increasing at present, expanding the scope of its significance in the context of the growing demographic crisis.</jats:p>
