Abstract
<jats:p xml:lang="en">Utopias tell the dreams of humanity, the history that gave rise to them, and the ways in which they were lived. This volume traces the story of utopias from the earliest narratives of Plato and Thomas More to the present day, when we find ourselves asking whether there is still room for utopias. The history of the ideal city runs parallel to that of utopias, but is more closely tied to the experience of those who inhabit and live the city. The future then appears near, since it is possible to begin building it in the present. From the Renaissance to today, the ideal city seems close and achievable through the work of designers, starting with the great Leonardo da Vinci. Retracing the events of modern architecture allows us to glimpse our dreams and desires reflected in the many ideal cities that have been imagined — and perhaps to catch sight of those that still await us.</jats:p>
