Abstract

«Truth is simple», Piergiuseppe Scardigli liked to say, reminding that philology is, above all, a historical science of “measure” and of the text. This volume pays tribute to a leading figure of twentieth-century scholarship, who helped raise Germanic philology from its originally ancillary status and establish Germanic philology as an autonomous discipline. From 1950s Florence to the international stage, Scardigli’s work moves between Gothic texts and Germanic identity in Italy, guided by intellectual curiosity and rigorous method. Drawing on documents, recollections, and images, the book offers a scholarly portrait and invites readers to rediscover the University as a space of dialogue, knowledge, and the re-enchantment of the past.
