Abstract

Slovenian Mediterranean agriculture (SSK) faces numerous challenges, including climate change, limited resources, and fragmented regional support. As part of the strategy development for SSK, one of the key solutions identified was the establishment of the Knowledge Network for Sustainable Slovenian Mediterranean Agriculture, which will bring together research and educational institutions, advisory services, farmers, and other stakeholders. The network will be based on three pillars of collaboration (target, research, and support pillars) and organized through an assembly, a management board, and sector-specific operational bodies. A special role will be played by the Competence Centre for Olive Growing and Mediterranean Crops in Plavje (ZRS Koper), which will serve as a hub for knowledge and the transfer of good practices. A key communication tool will be the Knowledge Portal (AKIS), providing access to research results, educational materials, and practical recommendations. The network will also be actively involved in promotion and participation at fairs, events, and in the media, aiming to ensure widespread dissemination of knowledge and innovation into practice. A major milestone was achieved with the signing of the Letter of Intent for the establishment of the network (April 8, 2025), signed by nine founding members. This marks a solid foundation for the further development of the network and the sustainable advancement of Slovenian Mediterranean agriculture.
