Abstract

The paper presents seventeen letters and three receipts that Belgrade Metropolitan Mihailo (Miloje Jovanović) addressed to Russian Countess Antonina Dmitrievna Bludova in the 1861–1863 period. The letters provide proof of the prevailing political situation in Serbia and Europe, the Slavic Question and its potential solutions. They constitute a precious body of evidence on cooperation between Serbs and Russians in the fields of politics, spirituality, culture and education. In addition to the mentions of the unrealised plan forged by the Serbo-Bosnian Committee of the general uprising in the Balkans in 1861 and efforts to secure Russian political support in 1862, these letters also elucidate the education pursued by Serbs in Russia, the exchange of books and magazines, as well as continuous Russian monetary assistance provided to the Belgrade Theological Seminary. This paper is the fourth instalment in the publication of this extensive collection of Metropolitan Mihailo’s letters that are kept in the personal Panin-Bludov Fonds in the Russian State Archive of Ancient Documents (RGADA) in Moscow.
