Abstract

Firstly, the paper briefly presents the development of the political thought of the Serbian Social Democrats about the national question in the Balkans, starting with the founding of the Serbian Social Democratic Party in 1903 until the end of the first decade of the 20th century. Following that, the stance of the party leadership towards the issue of national liberation of the non-Turkish peoples in the central parts of the Balkan Peninsula is analysed, as well as towards the war waged by Serbia, Montenegro, Bulgaria and Greece against the Ottoman Empire in the autumn of 1912. The emphasis is on the views of the Serbian Social Democrats regarding the Albanian question, primarily in the context of the actions of the Serbian army in the northern regions of Albania between the autumn of 1912 and the beginning of World War I in 1914, as well as the policy of the Kingdom of Serbia towards the Albanian population in the territory annexed to the Serbian state during the Balkan Wars of 1912–1913. The work is based primarily on the writings of SSDP leaders published in the party newsletters “Radničke novine” and “Borba”, unpublished documents kept in the Archives of Yugoslavia, as well as relevant literature.
