Abstract
The present volume is the result of the symposium “Names and Conflicts” which was held in Uppsala in November 2023. The symposium was arranged by the Institute for Language and Folklore and the department of Scandinavian Languages at Uppsala University in collaboration with NORNA and gathered about 60 participants. Keynote speakers were Associate Professor Karen Pennesi from University of Western Ontario and Associate Professor Maria Gussarsson from the Swedish Defence University. The proceedings contain 14 peer-reviewed articles that span across different parts of the onomastic research field including sociolinguistics, language history, name planning and linguistic landscapes. The articles cover a time span from the Middle Ages up until the 21st century. Insights into different name types including place names, personal names and bynames from Canada, Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden are presented.
