Abstract
<jats:p>The article is dedicated to the 175th anniversary of the birth of Aleksandr Aleksandrovich Bunge, a Russian naval physician and zoologist, polar explorer, Doctor of Medicine, and flag physician of the Baltic Fleet. He took part in several expeditions of the Russian Geographical Society and the Academy of Sciences to explore the Russian North, as well as in the Russian-Swedish hydrographic expedition to Spitsbergen. He was the author of ethnographic and medico-geographical studies of the nature and natural resources of the North, research on medical support for navigation in the northern seas, on the organization of medical evacuation and sanitary-preventive services for the navy during wartime, and on the prevention of avitaminosis and occupational diseases among sailors.</jats:p>
