Abstract

Modern medicine excels at detecting disease but often overlooks the lived experience of illness. Narrative medicine, the disciplined practice of recognizing, absorbing, interpreting, and acting on patients' stories, offers a corrective. This opinion piece argues that narrative medicine is not a luxury reserved for well-resourced health systems but a practical, evidence-informed approach that sharpens diagnosis, strengthens therapeutic relationships, protects clinicians against burnout, and improves patient outcomes. Drawing on the cultural realities of Bangladesh, where illness narratives are shaped by family dynamics, spirituality, stigma, and economic precarity, we contend that attentive listening is especially valuable in high-volume, resource-constrained settings where the patient's story may be the most accessible diagnostic resource. We examine narrative medicine's core principles, its cultural relevance, implementation challenges, and the opportunities and risks posed by digital tools, and we propose feasible pathways for integrating narrative practice into Bangladeshi medical education and clinical care.
