Abstract

The competency-based approach to leadership represents a contemporary paradigm that views managerial activity as a set of measurable competencies – knowledge, skills, attitudes, and behavioral indicators – which ensure the effectiveness of leaders in achieving organizational strategic goals. The rapid development of generative artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming traditional leadership requirements: leaders must combine digital and AI literacy with strategic vision, analytical and adaptive thinking, high-level communication, and ethical awareness. In the context of transformative changes, competent leadership becomes a key factor in effective management and the integration of technological innovations into business processes. The aim of this study is to analyze theoretical approaches to competency-based leadership and to develop a conceptual model for the staged development of competencies for “leaders prepared to utilize generative AI.” The research methodology included systematic analysis of English- and Ukrainian-language scientific literature, content analysis of corporate leadership practices, synthesis and conceptualization of the findings, and the formulation of recommendations for implementing structured learning trajectories for managers. The study identified key competencies for modern leaders, including digital and AI literacy, strategic and analytical thinking, change management skills, communication, and ethical competence. A staged model for leadership development was proposed, integrating technological, analytical, and socio-managerial aspects of leadership, enabling leaders to be prepared for the effective implementation and utilization of generative AI in organizational processes. The scientific novelty of the research lies in the comprehensive synthesis of theoretical approaches and practical competency development models in the context of generative AI. Future research directions include empirical verification of the proposed learning model, assessment of the impact of developed competencies on the success of AI project implementation, and comparative analysis of leadership competency development across different sectors and organizational cultures, particularly in Ukrainian and international contexts.
