Abstract

The book is a collection of texts devoted to Western Podhale, resulting from ethnographic field research conducted in 2021–2024 in Chochołow, Nowe Bystre and the surrounding villages. The authors, focusing on different aspects of local reality, studied the ambiguity of the concept of ‘heritage’, both in its official forms and everyday practices, attitudes and worldviews. Heritage is not only traditional costume, customs or architecture, but also work, religiousness, remembrance, education and social relations. The publication does not provide simple definitions and clear answers, but offers a careful, anthropological story about the borderlands of heritage.
