Abstract

This is a comment on the vision statement for sociology published by Aksoy, Manzo, Birkelund and Raub (2026). It supports their vision of open science in sociology but argues that open science is urgent and should be the first, if not only priority of modern sociology. It discusses recent evidence that sociology is the least reliable of the major social and behavioral science disciplines. It is essentially unreliable as a whole. It also argues that public sociology should not be removed from sociology but simply made transparent and open. Finally, it concludes that sociologists themselves should be humble and honest in public that their discipline is not reliable, rather than defending a failed status quo.
