Abstract
The book is the first in Russian and international Slavic studies to provide a monographic description of the versatile diversity of Slavic demonological systems, with regard to their regional specificity. It summarizes the long-term work on collecting, classifying and analyzing data on the lower mythology of the Slavs. A special essay tells about the specific Polessian demonology, which is well studied thanks to the ethnolinguistic expeditions under the guidance of Academician N.I. Tolstoy held in 1970–1980s. An essay on modern Greek mythology, which had a significant influence on Slavic mythological views, especially South Slavic, is also published. The essays contain valuable field material collected by the authors. The publication will be a valuable source for specialists - mythologists, folklorists, ethnolinguists, historians for further investigations. It will also be of interest to the widest range of readers - to everyone interested in Slavic folk culture.
