Abstract
Discover the life path and scientific achievements of outstanding Ukrainian microbiologist Sergiy Mykolayovych Winogradsky, whose researches left an indelible mark in the history of science. In young age, Wino- gradsky showed an extraordinary interest in nature and science. His educational path, which passed through the Kyiv University and Swiss Higher Technical School in Zurich, was the beginning of a great scientific journey which led him to discoveries that changed our understanding of microbiology and soil science overall. Sergiy Winogradsky is known for his pioneering research into the processes of chemosynthesis and the nitrogen cycle. He was the first who showed that some bacteria can obtain energy through chemosynthesis, using inorganic compounds, and thus opened new horizons in the understanding of the metabolism of microorganisms. His work on nitrogen fixation revealed the mechanisms where bacteria can convert atmospheric nitrogen into forms available to plants that was of great importance to agriculture and ecology. Throughout his life, Winogradsky worked at leading scientific institutions in Europe, including the Institute Pasteur in Paris, where his researches and teaching influenced by many generations of scientists. His discoveries became the basis for many subsequent studies in microbiology and soil science, contributing to the development of these disciplines. This book is an attempt to pay tribute to a man who made a significant contribution to world science, and who continues to inspire new generations of researchers. The authors decided to publish the book also in English in order to expand the number of possible readers and deepen students’ knowledge of the history of science and the English language. We invite you on a journey through the life and scientific achievements of Sergiy Mykolayovych Winogradsky, in order to experience together the greatness and significance of his contribution to science.
