Abstract
<jats:p>The review characterises the results of a contrastive study of one subtype of medical terminology—namely, gynecology and obstetrics—based on Ukrainian and Polish. The relevance of the monograph’s subject matter is обусловлена the need to advance comparative linguistics in general and terminology studies in particular, as well as terminography and linguodidactics (teaching Ukrainian and Polish as foreign languages). The novelty of Oksana Borys’s research lies in the fact that the identified subtypes of medical terms have not previously been the object of linguistic analysis. The structure of the monograph is analysed. It corresponds to the stated research aim and includes an Introduction; a theoretical part (Chapters 1 and 2); an analytical part (Chapters 3–5); General Conclusions; a bibliography (449 entries); and a source base for the extraction of Ukrainian and Polish terms (16 works published between 2012 and 2021), as well as appendices comprising five schemes, six tables, and seventeen diagrams. The review outlines the theoretical foundations presented in the first two chapters, devoted to the factors shaping the broader theoretical context of the problems under consideration. The reviewer emphasises the author’s ability to analyse complex and debatable issues in the applied chapters, noting that the presentation is consistently logical and concludes with well-systematised findings. The review underscores the significance of the independently obtained general results of the study within the framework of contrastive analysis: as conceived by the author of the monograph, these results form the basis for a future Ukrainian–Polish and Polish–Ukrainian dictionary of gynecology and obstetrics and contribute to the development of didactic tasks for learning Ukrainian and Polish.</jats:p>
