Abstract
The research aims to justify the need to develop the content of an extensive reading course in English for students majoring in Foreign Language Teaching Methodology, taking into account their professional orientation. To describe the specific features of teaching extensive reading in higher education, the terms “reading” and “extensive reading” were defined, and the distinctive characteristics of organizing extensive reading at the university level were presented. To determine the structure and thematic content of the course, a comparative analysis was conducted of curricula and programs of specialized disciplines in selected universities for the following majors: Foreign Language Teaching Methodology (Ural Federal University), Theory and Methodology of Teaching Foreign Languages and Cultures (Kazan Federal University, RUDN University) to identify the main principle and trajectory for constructing the block structure of extensive reading. Based on the analysis, the thematic content was specified and the structure of an extensive reading course for students majoring in Foreign Language Teaching Methodology was determined, which includes 8 blocks, and methodological recommendations for organizing extensive reading were also compiled, along with a list of recommended monitoring and evaluation activities. The scientific novelty of the research lies in the development of the content of an extensive out-of-class reading course for students majoring in Foreign Language Teaching Methodology. As a result of the research, the structure of an extensive reading course was described, ensuring students’ sequential mastery by theoretically and lexically complex material, which will contribute to the effective integration of theoretical and practical knowledge acquired by students.
