Abstract
In scholarship, the book as an autonomous object of study has traditionally been examined by librarians, philologists, cultural scholars, historians, and art historians. In particular, book graphics have been studied as a distinct art form, and the imagistic and stylistic features of interpreting literary images and plots have been analyzed. Contemporary understanding of the book among artists and specialists is actively expanding and transforming; therefore, the aim of this study is to systematize contemporary types of “book arts”, which requires a detailed investigation and the development of a new research methodology and typology for this phenomenon. Accordingly, the following tasks must be addressed: conduct a formal-stylistic and comparative analysis of a corpus of works of Russian art, and on the basis of the results obtained propose an original typology of book art. The article identifies and characterizes types and kinds of book art and provides and explains examples of corresponding artworks. The scientific novelty lies in the proposed systemic approach to the scholarly understanding of the artistic interpretation of the book in contemporary art, previously absent in art history, as well as in including art objects, performances, and installations in the typology of book art. The result of the study is an original typology based on selection and systematization criteria developed during the course of the study for typical cases of artistic interpretation of the book in contemporary art.
