Abstract

The term “holy mountains” is frequently employed and not only in Byzantium. The sacred character is most derived from their comparison or assimilation with the holy mountains of the Bible and the New Testament, as well as with the "Mount of God" found in patristic literature. The studies contained in this volume explore the relationship between the ‘holy mountain’ as an image and symbol and the various ‘holy mountains’ which, in Byzantium and elsewhere—from Sinai to the Balkans—have made it a concrete reality.
