Abstract

<jats:p>Plants have been healing people since long before anyone wrote a word about medicine. A grandmother crushing neem leaves for a skin problem, a healer in the Himalayas boiling roots for fever, a village elder in the Western Ghats knowing exactly which bark to use and when — this kind of knowledge has quietly kept entire communities alive for thousands of years. This book is about that knowledge, and about what is happening to it right now, in a world of gene editing, artificial intelligence, and nanotechnology. The book opens by laying out the scale of this problem — how global demand for herbal medicine has grown into a market worth hundreds of billions of dollars, and how that demand is pushing wild plant populations toward collapse through overharvesting, habitat loss, and climate change. From there, it moves into the science trying to catch up with this crisis. Its show how artificial intelligence is cutting years off the drug discovery process, letting scientists screen thousands of plant compounds in weeks instead of decades. There is also a strong focus on India specifically — its Ayurvedic, Siddha, and Unani traditions, its fast-growing AYUSH industry, and the sheer botanical richness of places like the Western Ghats and the Himalayas. Alongside this, the book looks at newer tools: nanoparticles made from neem and turmeric that could power smart bandages and sensors, mobile apps that identify plants from a photo, and blockchain systems meant to trace an herbal product all the way back to the farm it came from. But this isn't a book that simply celebrates technology. It also asks harder questions. Who actually benefits when a pharmaceutical company patents a compound that tribal communities have used for generations, often without ever telling or paying them? Can gene editing and lab-grown nanoparticles really scale up to meet global demand without cutting corners?
