Abstract

This article addresses the pressing issue of instilling traditional Russian spiritual and moral values in future young professionals. Using specific examples, the author examines the potential of topics studied in a university course on Russian history in the context of developing students’ values such as patriotism, civic responsibility, service to the Fatherland and responsibility for its future, historical memory and intergenerational continuity, and the unity of the peoples of Russia. A number of historical subjects are particularly important in shaping the values of patriotism and respect for the memory of the defenders of the Motherland. One of these subjects is undoubtedly the study of the Great Patriotic War. Students are particularly moved by research projects that explore the role and contribution of their family members to the victory over Nazi Germany. The value of preserving interethnic peace and unity among the peoples of Russia is highlighted through the study of the history of Ossetia, which is an integral part of Russian history. The combination of national and regional content in the course of Russian history allows students to develop a love for their “big” and “small” homeland, a national civic identity, and a sense of continuity between generations. By incorporating regional historical content into the course of Russian history, students can use specific examples to demonstrate the collective contributions of all the peoples and ethnic groups in the region to the development of Ossetia’s economy and culture. This approach to studying the material highlights the importance of solidarity and internationalism in a multi-ethnic and multi-religious region.
