Abstract
The “Basics of Poetry Studies” is intended for classroom teaching of philology students and self-study of all those interested in literature. The initial elements of this discipline are usually presented as part of the course “Basics of Literary Studies” at the philological faculties of Russian universities, but "Basics of Poetry Studies" is also often taught as a special course or an elective course for students who want to expand their basic knowledge. This manual is based on the educational module “Poetry Studies” developed by its author, which was part of the project “Humanitarian Russia: Linguocultural Thesaurus”, which was carried out at the Philological Faculty of Lomonosov Moscow State University in 2009 by order of the Federal Agency for Education and for a number of years has been presented online on the website of the said faculty for the needs of distance learning. The manual introduces readers to three traditional sections of versification (metrics and rhythm - strophics - phonics), with its terminological apparatus and methods of studying poetic speech. The main concepts of versification are explained within the sections of the course. Reference and information material on the theory of verse is presented in the form of dictionary entries, to which teachers can refer students. Philologists-teachers are also recommended to use the practical tasks and test questions attached to the theory, which are connected both to consolidate the educational material by students and to implement self-control on the part of those studying the presented theoretical course.
