Parameterized Data Model for Enhanced PFAS-Emission Calculations Based on Public European Data

<jats:p>PFAS emissions are used as a proxy for risk in the ongoing European PFAS restriction proposal. Based on public data from ECHA’s Risk Assessment Committee (RAC), this study builds a parameterized emission model that differentiates PFAS subgroups and life cycle stages. The model reproduces RAC sector totals by a bottom-up reconstruction and adds granularity not provided in the published opinion. Based on RAC’s data, fluoropolymer-related emissions are about 1,449 t/a, 90% below previous assumptions. Scenario analysis indicates that technically achievable reductions in raw material production and end-of-life treatment could lower fluoropolymer emissions by a further order of magnitude, supporting a reassessment of their regulatory treatment.</jats:p>
