Abstract
<jats:p>Статья посвящена рассмотрению группы сопоставимых между собой по внешнему звуковому облику этнонимов, зарегистрированных в среде якутов как сабар и сабарай и у бурят как hабарнууд. Привлечение доступных сведений письменных источников, фольклорных и лингвистических данных позволяет объяснить происхождение этих этнонимов как восходящих к личным именам, которые имеют внятные этимологические объяснения на основе собственных языков, следовательно эти этнонимы могли бы рассматриваться как формальные параллели. В то же время в статье показано, что формальные лингвистические критерии допускают поиск более широких параллелей в истории народов степной Евразии.</jats:p> <jats:p>In the paper it is analyzed a group of ethnonyms attested among the Yakuts and Buryats and to be comparable to each other in external sound appearance. The authors of this paper used available written sources and folklore data and relied on the results of historical linguistics. The article shows that the Yakut ethnonyms Sabaray and Sabar, mentioned in the 19th century being reflected the names of administrative units (respectively, the Sabaray (Sabir) nasleg [Rus. Sabarayskiy (Sabirskiy) nasleg] of the Borogon ulus and the Sabar clan [Rus. Sabarayskiy rod] of the Köbökön nasleg of the Namsky ulus according to the 1897 census) and the Buryat ethnonym Habarnūd can be independently explained as going back to personal names that have clear own etymologies based on local languages in both cases, and therefore could be considered as only formal parallels without any historical connections. At the same time, formal linguistic criteria allow one for the search for broader parallels for these ethnonyms in the history of the peoples of the Eurasian steppe, although they cannot be substantiated historically. The authors of the paper without insisting on any of the versions try to show a specific example of the limitations of existing research methods for obtaining a certain result in the study of historical ethnonymy.</jats:p>
