The issues of its genesis, evolution, artistic design and manufacturing technologies are considered. Materials were used from the funds of the Ytyk-Kyuel Literary and Art Museum-Reserve “Taatta” located in the village of Ytyk-Kyuel, Tattinsky district of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia). Particular attention is paid to the features of the exhibits from the museum collection, which allows for a deeper understanding of the local traditions and craft skills of the Yakuts. The research is carried out in accordance with the unified methodological requirements of ethnographic museum source studies. The study of the genesis of the Yakuts’ kumys vessels is aimed at identifying the specifics of ethno-cultural contacts and the degree of influence of ancient and medieval civilizational cultures on the formation of decorative and applied art of the Yakuts. To analyze the chorons’ evolution from the archaic period to the present day, a set of methods is used, including studying the history of the emergence of kumys vessels, photographic recording of chorons from the 19th – 21st centuries, and interviewing modern masters of kumys vessel making. The relevance of the issue lies in the fact that against the background of growing interest in traditional culture, research aimed at identifying local features of elements of folk culture is becoming especially popular. In this context, studying kumys vessels based on the collection of the Tatty District Museum becomes particularly relevant.
