Abstract

This book is Vol. 1 of a two-volume edition of selected works by R. Z. Sag-deev, an outstanding Soviet, Russian, and American scientist. This volume represents Sagdeev’s contributions to plasma physics and fusion research. Specific subjects include anomalous transport, collisionless shocks, weak turbulence theory, neoclassical transport, and parametric instabilities. Some papers are commented on by recognized experts in the field to highlight hi-torical context and progress in subsequent research. The first two chapters in Vol. 1 include comments by the author, who provides an invaluable ac-count of the late 1950s — early 1960s events in controlled nuclear fusion research. Vol. 2 contains R. Z. Sagdeev’s contributions to astrophysics and space research. In the interests of historical accuracy, articles are printed in the language of the original publication, i. e. in Russian or English, while maintaining a va-riety of styles in the lists of reference. All the commentaries are in English. This collection will interest professional physicists, students and teachers of physics, and readers concerned with the history of science.
