Abstract
House and Farm through Four Thousand Years. A Research Programme for Investigations of Settlement and Agricultural Sites from the Late Neolithic to the Middle Ages at the Museum of Cultural History builds on more than a hundred years of archaeological excavations in South-eastern Norway and, through ten chapters, presents up-to-date knowledge about buildings and agricultural communities of the past. Extensive settlement excavations of former farming communities in South-eastern Norway have taken place over the last 25 years, and some of these have provided a basis for new research. Nevertheless, there are still significant gaps in our knowledge. This research programme presents concrete proposals for strategies and measures that will contribute to further scholarly development. As part of this work, the Museum of Cultural History will in particular seek to improve understanding of the social and economic organisation of past agricultural societies in the years to come. House and Farm through Four Thousand Years is written for researchers, heritage managers, students, and others who wish to delve more deeply into the history of dwelling and farming. The book will be an important tool for planning and conducting future excavations of agrarian sites and will serve as a basis for the advice the museum provides in connection with the management of traces of past agricultural societies in South-eastern Norway.
