Abstract

This book is the first comprehensive study in Africana literary scholarship dedicated to the creative work of Senegalese writer and filmmaker Sembène Ousmane, covering his novels, novellas, short stories, and poetry from 1956 to 1981. The author offers a new interpretation of Sembène’s artistic style, defining him as a neorealist with a distinct African specificity and as a people’s writer of Senegal. The book is intended for students and scholars in the humanities, as well as for anyone interested in African culture.
