Abstract

For the first time, this article presents Lazar Lissitzky’s complete report, “Printing Design of a Book” (1931), along with materials from the ensuing debate. Preserved in the N.I. Khardzhiev archive, the transcript is in the form of a typescript extensively edited by the author. These documents serve as a poignant snapshot of the era, providing insight into the challenging environment of defamation and obstruction experienced by avant-garde artists of yesteryear, who maintained their positions within the artistic and university realms. Additionally, Lissitzky’s text is complemented by comprehensive commentary and visuals, offering a new perspective on this historical context.
