Abstract

"The expanding power of social media as an information source, combined with lagging media literacy among users, has produced significant structural challenges for Mongolian journalism. This imbalance has resulted in four interrelated challenges: political manipulation, market driven pressures, the vulnerability of media institutions, and the growing influence of individual communicators. Politically motivated and profit oriented actors increasingly disseminate polarized and manipulative content aimed at shaping public opinion and diverting attention from key social issues. At the same time, influencers and social media platforms—through algorithmic governance and attention based market logic—have become powerful forces that further complicate the journalistic environment in Mongolia."
