Abstract
<jats:p>В статье рассматривается влияние Роберта Саути (1774–1843), видного английского поэта и мыслителя, на интеллектуальную деятельность женщин-писательниц в эпоху романтизма. Анализ переписки поэта-лауреата с начинающими авторами позволил переосмыслить его роль в формировании литературной среды 1820–1830-х гг. Автор стремится показать, как Саути воспринимал и оценивал литературную деятельность женщин, какие опасности видел на их творческом пути, и от каких ошибок пытался их предостеречь. Долгое время в англоязычной историографии господствовало мнение о мизогинистических взглядах Саути. Автор оспаривает эту точку зрения, предлагая альтернативную интерпретацию напутствий мыслителя молодому поколению, независимо от их пола и социального положения. Исследование показало, с какими трудностями сталкивались женщины, стремясь выйти за рамки навязанной им роли «ангела в доме» и найти своё место под литературным солнцем. В статье предпринята попытка взглянуть по-новому на интеллектуальный климат эпохи романтизма и выявить роль женщин в литературной среде Великобритании 1820-1830-х гг.</jats:p> <jats:p>This article examines the influence of Robert Southey (1774–1843), a prominent English poet and thinker, on the intellectual activity of women writers in the era of Romanticism. The analysis of the poet laureate's correspondence with aspiring authors allows us to rethink his role in shaping the literary environment of the 1820s and 1830s. The author of the article seeks to show how Southey perceived and evaluated the literary activity of women, what dangers he saw on their creative path, and what mistakes he tried to warn them against. For a long time, first of all, the opinion about Robert Southey's misogynistic views prevailed in English-language historiography. However, the author of the article disputes this point of view, offering an alternative interpretation of the thinker’s words to the younger generation, regardless of their gender and social status. The study showed the difficulties women faced in trying to go beyond the role of the "angel in the house" imposed on them and find their place under the literary sun. The article attempts to take a fresh look at the intellectual climate of the Romantic era and identify the role of women in the literary environment of Great Britain in the 1820s and 1830s.</jats:p>
