Schooling, Gender Parity, and Social Development Outcomes in Sub-Saharan Africa: A Cross-National Analysis

<title>Abstract</title> <p>Education is widely regarded as a central component of human and social development, yet cross-national evidence does not always show uniform associations between school participation and broader child and adolescent outcomes. This study examines whether secondary-school participation and gender parity in secondary enrollment are associated with selected social development outcomes across Sub-Saharan African countries. Using secondary country-level data from internationally recognized development databases, the study applies bivariate cross-national regression models to assess associations with youth literacy, a child-health indicator, children in employment, and early marriage. The reported results show that gross secondary-school enrollment was not statistically associated with youth literacy, child health, or children in employment in the estimated models. In contrast, higher secondary-school enrollment was negatively and significantly associated with early marriage (reported coefficient = -0.338, p &lt; 0.001). Gender parity in secondary enrollment was positively associated with youth literacy (reported coefficient = 41.158, p = 0.001) and negatively associated with early marriage (reported coefficient = -45.513, p &lt; 0.001). These findings suggest that school participation and, particularly, more equal participation of girls and boys may be linked to important protective and developmental outcomes, while other relationships remain contingent on education quality and wider socioeconomic and institutional conditions. Because the analysis is observational and cross-sectional, the findings are interpreted as associations rather than causal effects.</p>
