Abstract
<title>Abstract</title> <p>Somnophilia is examined as a sexual interest in sleeping persons and, in its receiving form, as an interest in being sexually approached while asleep. Existing distinctions between consensual and nonconsensual interests leave unresolved how authorization operates when one person cannot, or does not wish to, respond. This qualitative netnography analyzes user-generated material from FetLife, Joyclub, and Reddit. It identifies three orders of responsiveness: delegated transgression, habitualized couple expectations, and perpetrator-imposed nonresponsiveness. In delegated transgression, the receiving person authorizes a bounded scene in which the other is expected to appear moved by autonomous desire rather than merely following instructions. This structure differs from unilateral entitlement and from posts that openly discuss covert sedation, disabling resistance, and providing an intoxicated partner to third parties. Across the material, bodily reactions, relationship status, past practices, nonresistance, and later pleasure can be recoded as permission, converting ambiguity into sexual entitlement. Prior authorization is therefore neither a blank check nor exhausted by formal rule compliance. As the possibility of contemporaneous response decreases, the acting person’s responsibility for conservative interpretation, monitoring, and self-restraint increases.</p>
