Resource recommendations for injured workers exiting a workers’ compensation claim: an e-Delphi study

<title>Abstract</title> <p> <bold>Purpose</bold> : Transitioning out of a workers’ compensation claim can be an uncertain time for workers, negatively affecting their wellbeing. Limited resources exist to facilitate transition from the claim environment to life after the claim. The purpose of this study was to reach consensus on the nature, content and method of delivery of resources to support injured workers finalising a claim. <bold>Methods</bold> : A three-round e-Delphi study was conducted with panellists including injured workers and workers’ compensation stakeholders, including medical practitioners, allied health practitioners, workplace rehabilitation providers, the workers’ compensation scheme regulator and claims management professionals, both insurer based and employer based. <bold>Results</bold> : Fifty-three panellists provided recommendations related to resource development in Round 1, before providing feedback on the resultant themes in Round 2 and examples of pathways for implementation of these recommendations in Round 3. Twenty-four recommendations were developed, with eight items reaching consensus (Structured Exit Framework, De-medicalisation Focus, Actionable vs. Informational, Literacy &amp; Accessibility, Stigma &amp; Disclosure Management, Regulator Stewardship, Exit Care Package, Pre-Settlement Education), with support shown for proposed implementation pathways. <bold>Conclusion</bold> : This study presents expert consensus related to resources that should be made available to injured workers finalising a compensation claim. Future research should consider consumer-informed co-development of resources and post-implementation evaluation. </p>
