Integrating cognitive linguistics and dialogic theory: A Framework for interpreting conversational dynamics in literary narratives

<title>Abstract</title> <p>This study investigates how cognitive linguistic frameworks can illuminate the interpretation of conversational exchanges in literary narratives. While dialogue is widely recognized as a central element of meaning construction and character development, existing research often addresses it from stylistic or narratological perspectives, leaving its cognitive dimensions underexplored. Drawing on concepts such as mental space theory, viewpoint phenomena, conceptual metaphor, and schema activation, this article examines how fictional conversations prompt readers to construct dynamic mental models of characters' intentions, emotions, and interpersonal relationships. Through a close analysis of selected narrative texts, the study demonstrates that dialogic structures encode patterns of cognition, perspective-taking, and inferential reasoning that guide the reader’s understanding of narrative events. The findings reveal that conversations in literature function not merely as verbal exchanges, but as cognitive actions that shape narrative coherence and emotional engagement. By integrating dialogic theory with cognitive linguistic tools, this research offers a unified framework for interpreting fictional dialogue as a window into the "dialogic mind"—the simulated cognitive world that emerges between characters and readers. This study contributes to cognitive poetics and discourse analysis by illustrating how conversations in fiction activate shared cognitive mechanisms that underpin narrative interpretation and readerly imagination.</p>
