Abstract

Abstract

Rapid advancements in next-generation sequencing technology, artificial intelligence and machine learning have generated vast biological data, which requires trained and skilled human resources capable of addressing the challenges in agricultural science. India's early efforts in bioinformatics education can be traced back to the establishment of a network of distributed information centers, supported by the Indian government and the Biotechnology Information System in the early 1980s. Initially, these programs focused on providing generalized, short-term training to equip professionals with fundamental skills. Over time, these educational initiatives evolved from short-duration, module-specific workshops to more structured diploma and degree programs, reflecting a growing demand for specialized interdisciplinary bioinformatics expertise. In order to address the need of trained bioinformatics professionals, a dedicated division was established within the College of Agricultural Biotechnology, Bihar Agricultural University (BAU), Sabour, Bhagalpur, Bihar, India. Undergraduate students study the ICAR-recommended blended biotechnology and bioinformatics coursework. The blended bioinformatics course provides multidisciplinary learning opportunities ranging from basic to advanced project-oriented course work for students joining the undergraduate Bachelor of Technology (Biotechnology) program. This article describes the bioinformatics curriculum integration, as well as opportunities and challenges in undergraduate bioinformatics education in India, and the leading developments at BAU, Sabour.
