Abstract

Abstract

Background Cancer is a growing public health concern in Maldives with many patients experience psychosocial challenges throughout diagnosis and treatment. The Cancer Society of Maldives (CSM) provides community-based psychosocial support through a cancer support group (CSG) yet little is known about how participation in such groups shapes patients’ lived experience. Aim This study explored how participation in a cancer support group influences coping, making meaning, and experiences of living with cancer among adults in the Maldives. Methods A phenomenological qualitative design was used to explore the lived experiences of CSG members. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 10 adults with diverse cancer diagnosis and different stages of treatment and follow-up. Interviews were audio recorded, transcribed verbatim and analyzed using thematic analysis. The results were reported via the Consolidated Criteria for Reporting Qualitative Research (COREQ) checklist. Results Five interrelated themes were identified: 1) sharing vulnerability and establishing trust; 2) discovering strength in unity; 3) learning how to cope together; 4) empowerment and strength; and 5) continued and strengthening participation in support groups. Participation in the CSG fostered emotional connection, reduced feelings of isolation and enabled shared meaning-making. Participants described learning coping strategies through supportive and non-judgmental peer interaction and gaining emotional strength and confidence through collective support. Conclusion Cancer support groups provide important psychosocial spaces that facilitate connection, coping and emotional well-being for people living with cancer Strengthening awareness, accessibility and institutional support for community-based support groups may enhance psychosocial care and complement clinical cancer treatment in the Maldives.
