Abstract
<jats:p>The study area is located in southern Poland, in the Carpathians between Cieszyn in the west and Przemyśl in the east. Complex physiogeographic and geoarchaeological analyses are helpful, including: analysis of the Digital Elevation Model and derived maps based on EU-DEM, geological characteristics of the immediate vicinity of the central part of the hillfort (maidan) based on geological map (1:50 000) litostratigraphy and tectonics of the surrounding area, relief and morphogenetic processes, a description of the mesoclimates of individual landscape elements around individual hillfort components based on hillfort plans (Marszałek 1993). The main methods include geoinformatics and geomorphological studies. The first of these was developed using modern ArcGIS Pro and QGiS software. Precise information from the National Geoportal (hillshading map) was also implemented. There are approximately 44 archaeologically confirmed the Early Medieval strongholds in the Polish Carpathians, often with difficult to determine chronological order. There are mostly small, single rampart structures, commonly found in forests within relatively low mountains and foothills. The strongholds’ basement is usually hard and compact. They often occur near brown, lessive soils. Detailed field research will be carried out on selected strongholds in the future.</jats:p>
