Abstract

“Open the doors for Christ!” Christology of Saint John Paul II. Selected aspects From the beginning of his pontificate, John Paul II placed at the center of the life and teaching of the Church the Person of Jesus Christ – the Redeemer of man. Christocentrism is clearly present in all his papal documents and in the preparations for the Jubilee Year 2000. The Great Jubilee of the Bicentennial Year has been alluded to in many papal documents, starting with John Paul’s first encyclical Redemptor hominis No. 1, where we read: “We are already approaching that date, which, without prejudice to all the corrections imposed by chronological exactitude, will recall and reawaken in us in a special way our awareness of the key truth of faith which Saint John expressed at the beginning of his Gospel: ‘The Word became flesh and dwelt among us’ (J 1:14), and elsewhere: ‘God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life’ (J 3:16)”. The book’s six chapters reveal selected aspects of St. John Paul II’s Christology. The first chapter shows the historical dimension of the person of Jesus Christ in the teaching of St. John Paul II. The second chapter shows Jesus Christ as the only Redeemer of man in the teaching of John Paul II. The third chapter deals with the Church of Jesus Christ. John Paul II’s view of the Church was shaped by the Second Vatican Council and the post-conciliar period, as expressed during his pontificate in the promotion of synodality, his emphasis on understanding the Church as a communion and, consequently, on Eucharistic ecclesiology, and his call to believers for a new missionary and evangelistic zeal. The fourth chapter reveals the Pope’s teaching on Mary and Joseph, to whom the Pope dedicated two encyclicals: Redemptoris Mater – Mother of the Redeemer and Redemptoris Custos – Guardian of the Redeemer. Chapter five deals with that part of John Paul II’s teaching which is sometimes referred to as the “theology of the body” and the proposal of a “new feminism” for short. Chapter six talks about Christianity’s encounter with other religions. John Paul II stressed that the mission of proclaiming Jesus Christ as the only Savior should be combined with interreligious dialogue, which is also part of evangelization. The book is part of the celebration of the 1700th anniversary of the First Ecumenical Council of Nice, whose jubilee year is 2025, at which, in the face of the Arian heresy, belief in the deity and humanity of the Son of God and the indivisible Trinity was affirmed. This makes it all the more worthwhile to recall the Christological teaching of St. John Paul II, who throughout his pontificate carried out the words chosen as the motto for the Jubilee Year 2000: “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever” (Hebrews 13:8).
