Abstract

<jats:p>The aim of the study is to analyze the prerequisites for the emergence of mass education in the process of modernization and its functions in shaping and maintaining national culture and identity. Theoretical and methodological basis of the study. The study is based on the concept of modernization, a constructivist approach to the analysis of nationalism, and a comparative-historical method. Research results: the main functions of mass education in the integration of society, the transmission of national culture, and the formation of national identity are shown. The main challenges facing national mass education systems at the end of the 20th and beginning of the 21st centuries are identified.</jats:p>
