Abstract
<jats:p>Mirar hoy la estética en la Edad Media es una tarea tan productiva como necesaria para la cultura actual. Este libro, fruto del interesantísimo encuentro que numerosos especialistas (filósofos y filólogos fundamentalmente) celebraron en Madrid en septiembre de 2022 bajo los auspicios de las universidades de Lublin y San Dámaso, es un ejemplo palpable de ello. Reunimos aquí los trabajos que de los participantes de distintas nacionalidades y lenguas que muestran lo fructífero que resulta acercarse hoy al modo en que muchos pensadores medievales abordaron la cuestión que actualmente englobaríamos con el término "Estética", tanto en lo que se refiere a pensar las cuestiones de la belleza y el arte como la propia vida estética en sus diversas manifestaciones. En muchos sentidos, el mundo medieval era otro mundo. Era un mundo estructurado por la fe religiosa y una concepción muy rica de la razón, en el que la salvación del hombre era la preocupación fundamental. ¿Acaso no lo sigue siendo hoy? Hemos alcanzado altas cuotas de desarrollo científico-técnico y de confort, pero el destino de nuestra civilización y de la humanidad en general sigue siendo dramático. La racionalidad científica e instrumental no es suficiente para que el ser humano viva en plenitud. El arte contemporáneo constituye un terreno privilegiado en el que hoy libramos nuestra batalla en busca de la plenitud y el sentido en este contexto de pensamiento marcadamente inmanentista, y con un déficit de perspectiva metafísica (pensamiento contemplativo y que atiende a las dimensiones transcendentales de la realidad). Por el contrario, la Edad Media tejió una filosofía de profundo calado metafísico, compenetrada con la teología y el arte de manera extraordinaria. Así, no sólo porque esta época ha sido fundamental en la constitución de la modernidad y de nuestra cultura, sino también por estas enormes diferencias que la caracterizan en relación con nosotros, atenderla es una fuente no sólo de conocimiento sobre nuestra manera actual de habitar el mundo (por contraste), sino a la par una fuente inspiradora que puede ayudarnos en enriquecer nuestro pensamiento y nuestra vida en general (y de manera particular la dimensión estética de la vida). This book tackles the necessary task of contrasting the medieval perspective on the aesthetic with our current perspective, so distant from each other! Some thirty prestigious scholars, philosophers, philologists, theologians, art experts, from various countries and languages imbibe the various medieval traditions and thinkers in an attempt to illuminate their conception of the aesthetic with the aim of enriching our present-day outlook. The book is structured in three thematic areas. The first section is a sort of prolegomena to the question of beauty in the Middle Ages. A second section studies and analyses the various currents of thought in medieval aesthetics, not only in terms of their mutual interrelationship, but also in terms of their connection with classical thought. Finally, a third part analyses the reception and evaluation of medieval aesthetics by contemporary culture, as well as its influence on the latter. The work arises from the conviction that dialogue between the present and the past, and particularly the medieval past, is fundamental in the task of resolving the many ruptures that corrode our culture. Harmony, beauty, as is evident in the contributions that weave the fabric of this work, springs magically - or rather, divinely - from the mysterious and unfathomable - and always novel - interweaving of differences, between the present and the past, the medieval and the contemporary, between theology, philosophy, philology, art..., between different cultures and countries. This work is an example of this, illuminating our times from the extraordinary experience lived by these people who preceded us and who have contributed - although often ignored - to the shaping of the best of our civilisation.</jats:p>
