Abstract

The aim of this source study is to present the image of World War I seen through the eyes of women and to show how strongly and on how many levels it interfered in various areas of life. The suggestive title of the study was inspired by Janina Gajewska's Diary from 1914 to 1919. Both Gajewska and other diarists who decided to write down their memories of the Great War provide us with a lot of valuable information, especially regarding wartime everyday life. […] It should be emphasised that the women, with great insight, recorded and described issues resulting from this unusual, strongly marked by war reality. The diarists whose accounts were used in this study can be described as extraordinary individuals (each in their own way), deserving to be remembered and, above all, appreciated because of the source value of the messages they left behind.
