Abstract

<jats:p>Charles Boissevain (1842–1927) came to the United States as correspondent of the Amsterdam Algemeen Handelsblad in 1880, his purpose, to make a survey of economic and social conditions throughout the Union. After his return, he continued his career in journalism and ultimately became editor of the Handelsblad, which he made one of the most distinguished liberal newspapers on the continent. In addition to the articles assembled and published as Van ’t Noorden naar ’t Zuiden (1881) he wrote a book on his travels in the Near East and a series of influential pamphlets on the Boer War.</jats:p>
