Abstract

This Field Guide addresses questions relating to the environments of sedimentary deposition and provenance in varied settings. In Chapter 1, tracks of a theropod dinosaur provide insights into the depositional environments of Early Jurassic strata of the Hartford basin (Connecticut).
Chapter 2 investigates microlaminated carbonaceous mudstones from the Hartford basin to reconstruct ancient water depths, water chemistry, and sedimentary facies of the same strata. Chapter 3 explores the origins of peri-Laurentian high-grade metasediments in Manhattan (New York) deposited during late Cambrian rifting using εNd values, detrital zircon ages, and metamorphic intensity data to determine their tectonic setting and provenance.
The final chapter considers sandstone grain size, mammal fossils, and oxygen and carbon isotope values in authigenic carbonates to reveal shifts in paleoclimate and tectonics within the half-graben of the eastern Española basin (New Mexico).
