Abstract
The Digital Literacy (DL) initiative within Teaching and Learning Engagement at the University Libraries (UL) at Virginia Tech (VT) began collaborating with the Cook Counseling Center’s facility dogs and handlers in 2021. The collaboration has led to numerous library-hosted events featuring the facility dogs, learning activities, and opportunities for students to connect with each other, counselors, and librarians. Though some assessment was done in the early stages of the collaboration, further assessment was desired. This chapter details the series of observation studies done at each of the dogs’ library-hosted birthday parties. Our findings highlighted the strengths and weaknesses of the DL table learning activities, identified areas for minor improvements, and began the early stages of understanding the effect the facility dogs have on student participation in library-hosted events.
