Abstract
<jats:p>Rework is a major problem that is costing the construction industry enormous monetary loss, yet in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries, there are limited studies on reworks and none of the studies focused on Oman. This study aims to fill this gap in Oman’s construction industry by investigating rework causes, impacts, and proposing mitigation measures. The study adopted a quantitative approach which entailed a questionnaire survey of construction professionals in Oman for data collection. The administration of the survey was based on stratified random approach. The surveys were distributed using an online survey approach to make it faster and easier to access otherwise hard to reach stakeholders. About 134 responses were received and analysed. The factor analysis revealed three most important causes of reworks to be inadequate supervision, changes by clients and errors/conflicting design information. Reduced profit, Contractual claims, and stakeholders’ dissatisfaction were found to be the most critical impacts of reworks while Proper training, pre-construction team building and Site quality management systems were the top mitigation strategies. Majority of the respondents acknowledged that reworks are a common occurrence on construction projects in Oman and the value has reached around 3% of contract value on average.</jats:p>
